{November 18, 2007}   Storm Chaser

There is a cyclone warning for up here in Australia’s sunshine state at the moment; a charming windbag by the name of Guba… Therefore I thought I may as well get into the spirit with some related photography. Here’s a couple of pictures by Anthony Cornelius, an amateur storm chaser… Hope you like it… I sure wish I had as much guts as some of these chasers…

{November 11, 2007}   Remembrance Day

For those outside of Australia who do not know what Remembrance Day is, it is the day that us Aussies take the time (on the 11 hour, of the 11 day, of the 11 month) to remember all those who fought and died…

Originally called ‘Armistice Day’ after the first world war ended, It was renamed ‘Remembrance Day’ after the second world war… The symbol of Remembrance is the Poppy…

Here is my mark of respect… it is a poem by Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae, after he had watched a friend die in battle…

In Flanders Field

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

Letter to my daughter: on being yourself

Dear Sally,

You must learn that you cannot be loved by all people.

You can be the finest apple in the world – ripe, juicy, sweet, and succulent – and offer yourself to all,
but there will be people who do not like apples.

If you are the world’s finest apple, and someone you love does not like apples, you still have the choice of becoming a banana, but be warned: if you choose to become a banana, you will be a second rate banana.

You must also realize that if you choose to be a second rate banana, there will be people who do not like bananas, so you can spend your life trying to be the best banana – which is impossible if you are an apple -
or you can seek again to be the finest apple.

Hugs, Daddy.
